SWEETS FOR MY SWEET, SUGAR FOR MY HONEY!

SWEETS FOR MY SWEET, SUGAR FOR MY HONEY!

Hi everybody out there in candy land!

‘BBBUUUZZZZZZZZZZZ’ This is the irritating sound that has you reaching for a rolled-up newspaper or a can of insect repellant, however in days gone by it would be more likely to have you licking your lips and making your tummy rumble!

As a kick-off for our new series of Blogs about different candy cultures I thought I would take you back to where it all began…honey.

Evidence of honey collecting goes back over 8,000 years! A cave painting in Valencia, Spain shows 2 hungry people scaling a tree to collect the guarded nectar of a precariously positioned hive being protected by a swarm of angry bees. Assuming other more easily obtained food sources were readily available on Terra Firma it highlights the human sweet tooth and our inherent craving for sugary goodness.

Even nowadays honey is a hot commodity with recent reports of hives being stolen in Brisbane as the cost of honey soars. I suppose we haven’t changed much since the cavemen have we?!
